Alan Dynin has been our daughter’s piano teacher since December 2018. She has been taking piano lessons for a while by then, through a music immersion program, but her progress has been slow and she was reluctant to practice piano (just another homework to her) consistently at home. We felt like if we continued like that, she would soon lose interest in playing piano, despite her innate love for music and singing. So, we quit the program and found Alan through a community recommendation.

The change we have seen in our daughter’s piano ability and enjoyment after starting lessons with Alan was almost immediate. Alan is an amazing teacher who is able to both encourage students to do their best, but also to have fun with by learning holiday music or popular music or experiment and even to write music of their own, in addition to the classical music that is the core of his training. Since our daughter started working with Alan, she plays piano without reminders – sometimes first thing in the morning, on her own. She actually enjoys it now. And her progress in level of proficiency has increased tremendously as well. In the first 5 months, she has learned 6 pieces from Burgmuller “25 progressive pieces” (Arabesque,Progress, Ballade, Sorrow, Anger’s Voices, and The Swallow) and played them at recitals and a talent show at school.

We would recommend Alan Dynin to anyone who wishes to learn piano, from the beginners to the intermediary and advanced students.

I wholeheartedly recommend Alan Dynin as a piano teacher.  A lesson with Alan covers more territory than just the 88 keys in front of us.  I’ve studied with him since February 2019, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the progress I’ve made in that time period.  His wide range of experience with multiple musical genres (classical, jazz, popular) and with all ages of students gives him a unique ability to meet me (and certainly his other students) where I am with technical ability, musical knowledge, and my taste in music.

In my earliest lessons with Alan, he took time to observe my existing technique and ask about musical preferences.  He immediately recognized wrist and arm tension as some of the limiting factors in my technique.  The simple, easy exercises he recommended made rapid and significant differences my ability to play smoothly and quickly.  From that first encounter, throughout the time I’ve studied with him, Alan has used a problem-oriented approach to technical challenges.

Because we agree that the purpose of improving technical ability is to make music, his teaching strikes a seamless balance of technique, musical theory and musical expression.  Whatever piece of music I am working on becomes the vehicle for exploration those elements of music making.

It is great fun and very satisfying to work with Alan.  He is a serious musician and a personable, encouraging, skilled teacher.  His criticisms are always cogent and helpful, and he is generous with praise for his students’ work and achievement.  He is an expert at his craft, whether teaching, performing or composing.

Alan has been teaching our sons (6&8) Piano for about a year now.  When our previous teacher retired, we were so worried about replacing her, but a friend recommended Alan to us and we never looked back.  Alan quickly formed a connection with the kids.  He really pushed and inspired them within the first few lessons. He also held frequent recitals which helped to keep them motivated, and empowered them with the confidence to perform in front of an audience!  We love Alan and will miss him dearly.  We highly recommend him as a piano teacher.

Alan taught piano to all three of my daughters beginning in second grade. Two of them continued lessons until they graduated from high school. Alan is a caring person and an enthusiastic teacher.

The most unique aspect of lessons with Alan is the concerts he organized every month or so. Alan and his students would perform at a retirement facility in the area, providing a wonderful blend of community service and performance exposure. The residents love hearing the children play, and the students gain valuable, low-stakes exposure to performing in public. The concerts would end with Alan playing some pieces that were popular during the residents’ youth, thrilling the audience and providing motivation for his students.

I recommend Alan Dynin for piano lessons.
