June 1, 2013 (Sat.) – When Gallaxies Collide: AstroJazz Meets the Music of Dave Brubeck

Dave Brubeck (who died last December) was one of the biggest names in Jazz over the last 50 years. He created new possibilites for jazz music, helped expand it’s audience, and became one of jazz’s global ambassadors. His groups’ classic tune Take Five is possibly the most instantly recognizable jazz song ever written! This concert is in part a tribute to him and his music.

AstroJazz is the brainchild of astronomer/jazz singer/composer Dr. Cherilynn Morrow. Astojazz uniquely combines engaging astronomical commentary and imagery with jazz pieces, both original and standard. She will share her reinvented lyrics to classics such as “Stardust” (a la SETI) and “Stormy Weather” (Solar Style). Brubeck recorded Stardust.

In this concert you will hear Cherilynn, bassist Scott Glazer and pianist Alan Dynin perform pieces Brubeck played that have an astronomical slant (Quiet As the Moon, When You Wish Upon A Star.)

You will also hear some classic original Brubeck group songs such as Take Five, Blue Rondo ala Turk, and In Your Own Sweet Way, and several of Cherilynn’s co-created melodic originals, such as Look Up! and Are We Alone? Cherilynn’s astronomical images will be folded in to create a unique multi-media experience.

February 8, 2013 (Fri.) Chopin/Dave Brubeck Valentine’s Piano Concert and Fundraiser

First half: Eight Chopin Etudes for Piano and other Chopin pieces, including a Chopin tribute piece Alan wrote called “Chopinesque”. Chopin’s Etudes, besides being lovely and powerful music, are notoriously difficult, and it is unusual for a large number of these pieces to be played at one sitting.

Second half: A tribute set to the late, great jazz master Dave Brubeck, who is most famously known for his group’s iconic jazz piece Take Five (written by Paul Desmond). Brubeck’s music helped awaken Alan’s passion for jazz as a teenager, especially his fusion of classical and jazz idioms. The Academe Jazz Birds, under Alan’s direction, will join in on Take Five and other pieces. Alan will also perform his original composition “Bru-Blue” (a tribute to Brubeck) which was recorded on the Split Tree Waltzes compilation CD.

Tickets for adults are $10 — all proceeds go to benefit the Music Department at Academe (which is the high school for the Waldorf School of Atlanta).
